REVIEW Reports O'Brien supervisors ponder new mental health law

Primghar, Iowa — As the state of Iowa continues to tweak its standards on providing mental health services, a new law requires regions to provide a mental health advocate.

A mental health advocate is a person that works in the best interest of a mentally ill person who was involuntarily hospitalized by the court system during the process and follow-up treatments

O'Brien County is a member and the fiscal agent for the Northwest Iowa Care Connections mental health services region.

It was asked by the region's other members - Clay, Dickenson, Lyon, Osceola and Palo Alto counties - to sign an intergovernmental agreement to make the advocate an O'Brien County employee, provide office space when necessary and serve as the base of operations.

The supervisors approved the agreement.
