I Support Rock Island Clean Line!
(A brief Introduction is as follows)
O'Brien County is being considered as the operational base location of a 250 million dollar, 3
,500 mega-watt direct current wind energy converter station. With a subsequent transfer line
from here across the state of Iowa into Illinois. Land procurement, development and regulatory
approval could begin as early as spring 2012.
What does this mean for O'Brien County?
- A windfall of property taxes from the converter station site and each running mile of transfer line and eventually each wind turbine.
- Increased long-term employment, approximately 20 new full-time positions
- Construction dollars spent throughout all of our local economies
- Goods and Services purchased by a host of people starting with development, construction, initial operational and long term operations.
- More people in our churches, schools, stores, hospitals, grocery stores, hardware stores, lumber yards, law offices, convenient stores, welding repair shops, gas and service stations, auto dealers, insurance agencies, and residents living in our communities.
- A housing boom for all of our communities.
- A much larger tax base for the county, lessening the burden on the existing tax structure and current payers.
- All of these items will be amplified once the wind farm companies see the converter and transfer line being built, because they will then start to build their wind turbine farms on these leases that they have been securing now for the last 10 years.
I have attached a sample support letter that you may use, or create your own. All forms can be returned to:
Beth Conley, Regional Outreach Manager
2418 Amherst Street, DSM, IA 50313.

HARKIN ANNOUNCES OVER $6.6 MILLION TO EXPAND ACCESS TO BROADBAND INTERNET IN RURAL IOWA COMMUNITIES
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that a total of $6,651,830 will be coming to Iowa for projects to bring broadband internet access to businesses and residents in rural communities. The grants and loans are being provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and were funded in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Harkin worked to secure these funds through his role as a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, which wrote the Recovery Act.
"
Broadband internet access is a necessary utility for people to stay connected, get information and even for students to do their homework. s economy."

"HOW TO HIRE, SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO FIRE"
by Patricia O'Brien Galasso
Dear Business Owners and Managers in O'Brien County:
Being able to lead and manage people is one of the most important business skills you can possess. As the number of people grows in your organization, the number of relationships grows â€"
and grows exponentially once you have four employees. For example, four people represent six relationships. Visualize each person as a dot and draw a connecting line between each dot. With four people, you have six connecting lines. Take it further and do the math: seven employees equal 21 relationships; 100 employees mean 4,950 relationships!
This exponential number of relationships can cause internal chaos in your business â€"
so let me show you how to learn the art of INTERVIEWING and HIRING great employees from the beginning, as well as how to continue MOTIVATING them.

UNI News Brief
Regions Selected for Rural Entrepreneurship as Part of Grow Iowa Values Funding
Host: University of Northern Iowa Regional Business Center SBDC
Announcement of New MyEntreNet Regions
The news conference will be held:
Thursday, Jan. 24 â€"
5:00 PM at the Corning Community Center â€"
601 6th Street â€"
Corning, Iowa
Friday, Jan. 25 - 1:00 p.m. at O'Brien County Courthouse Assembly Room, â€"

Primghar, Iowa
Representatives from the UNI Regional Business Center, Iowa Small Business Development Centers and regional economic development organizations will discuss the significance of being selected as a 2008 MyEntreNet region and provide an overview of the entrepreneurship system.
Adams County and O'Brien County have been selected as the two new regions for the MyEntreNet entrepreneurship development system. MyEntreNet receives funding through the State of Iowa's Grow Iowa Values Fund.
MyEntreNet is an entrepreneurship development system which creates community-based support networks for entrepreneurs, provides start up and existing companies with advanced technical assistance and training, and connects rural entrepreneurs with the financial resources they need to launch or grow small companies.
Each region selected will receive two years of customized technical assistance, training and networking assistance from Iowa's premier business development organizations, including the UNI's Regional Business Center, UNI's Institute for Decision Making, Iowa State University Extension Service, Iowa's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurship Centers, Iowa Lakes SBDC, Northwest Iowa SBDC, South Central Iowa SBDC, Iowa Lakes Community College and Southwestern Community College. In addition, each selected region will receive a $10,000 cash grant from the University of Northern Iowa to support their business assistance efforts.
Regional leadership submitted strong applications that demonstrated potential demand from nearly 100 existing and pre-venture entrepreneurs for access to capital, customized technical assistance, and training over the next two years. Their application also reflected strong regional support for business development in the county.
New regions each year will be added through a competitive process over the next decade, creating a statewide network of rural entrepreneurship resources, connecting Iowa businesses and communities with opportunity, education and capital.
