Desired Qualifications:

STRENGTHS OF A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in a safety or environmental field or 8+ years of experience in EHS work required.
  • Construction safety experience is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated influential leadership skills that have shifted culture of facilities, related to EHS views.
  • Required certifications: National Safety Council’s Advanced Safety Certificate and National Registry of Environmental Professionals Certified Environmental and Safety Compliance Officer Certificate. Higher level certifications can be substituted, these include Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, or Professional Engineer.
  • Completed professional development; OSHA General Industry 30-Hour, DOT Hazmat Transportation, OSHA Construction 10-hour, 24 hour HAZWOPER, and HAZWOPER Train-The-Trainer; or equivalent courses. You know how to engage an audience, no matter the size, while presenting and training on important environmental and safety related topics.
  • Workers’ Compensation administration experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills as well as the ability to embrace change.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and in person.
  • Have the ability to understand technical and day to day operations of a bioprocessing facility.
  • Know the basics of Microsoft Office Suite. You’re capable of learning new programs.

Duties:

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Specialist is a seen as a leader and resource amongst the EHS teams at the POET Bioprocessing locations. Responsible for leading of both POET environmental, health, and safety management systems at the bioprocessing facility. They will assist other regional POET bioprocessing facilities in this implementation, and may assist with other programs. The Senior EH&S Specialist creates, maintains and documents all training for the Environmental, Health, and Safety Program. Shall also be responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and facilitating safety training sessions for all team members at their designated bioprocessing facility and will assist with training on a regional basis. The Senior EH&S Specialist will lead and direct EHS audits and inspections, behavior observations, incident investigations, and will ensure corrective actions are implemented when needed. The Senior EH&S Specialist may also assist POET Design & Construction in monitoring contractor safety performance on projects at the bioprocessing facilities. This position will report to the General Manager of the bioprocessing facility.

DURING A TYPICAL DAY (IF THERE IS ONE):

  • Ensure written safety programs are reviewed and kept current and communicate changes to team members.
  • Remain up to date on new safety-related regulations, safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Facilitate regular regional training to enhance the capabilities of other local POET bioprocessing facility EHS Lead safety training sessions for a variety of people including new and existing team members and contractors.
  • Collect data, manage record retention of the EH&S management systems and maintain training records for each team member.
  • Responsible for maintaining and complying with the required elements of the Process Safety Management program and site specific safety programs.
  • Generate, review, and submit daily, weekly, monthly and annual safety and environmental reports.
  • Be an active participant in the local safety committee meetings.
  • Lead and direct safety and environmental audits throughout the facility and track and document completion of corrective actions needed.
  • Responsible for the 3rd Party Vendor and Contractor Management software. Also responsible for contractor waiver management for the for the facility.
  • Serve as the local expert resource for environmental compliance issues, including a thorough understanding of the facility’s environmental permits, hazardous waste management, SWPPP, RMP, SPCC, and other applicable state and federal regulatory requirements. Maintain permit required recordkeeping for a variety of environmental programs.
  • Assist other local POET bioprocessing facilities with compliance, training, or other EHS items that may arise, provide temporary EHS Specialist support in the event of an opening, and assist with the training of newly hired EHS Specialists.
  • Lead and/or participate in team root cause analysis of environmental, health and safety concerns.
  • Assist with Workers’ Compensation claims and reporting as requested. Lead the first report of injury and/or work with a third party triage service.
  • Assist with managing the list of recommendations generated during third party visits and audits (FM Global, Nationwide, etc).
  • Champion Safety, Health, and Environmental at the facility, utilizing influential leadership skills to drive and improve the facility culture of safe behavior and environmental compliance.
  • Participate with company-wide initiatives in the development of standard programs and implement the developed programs locally.
  • Coordinate regular calls with other local POET bioprocessing facility EHS Specialists to promote sharing of best practices and identify and communicate opportunities that may impact all of POET appropriately.
  • Function as a liaison between POET and government agencies.
