2022 O’Brien County Career Day Scholarship Program Recipient is Abby Schreck
Primghar, Iowa, May 31, 2022 – This year’s O’Brien County Career Day Scholarship recipient is Abby Schreck, a 2022 graduate of South O’Brien Community School District. Abby is a four-sport athlete, who achieved the high honor roll this year while working two jobs at local businesses. Her future plans include a business degree and coming back to O’Brien County to start her own business. Abby is encouraged by how O’Brien County residents support the local businesses and admires how our local businesses support community members in need.
O’Brien County Economic Development Corporation (OCEDC) and Sheldon Chamber & Development Corporation (SCDC) partnered again this year with Northwest Iowa Community College and ISU Extension & Outreach to bring Career Day to four area school districts. The mission of O’Brien County Career Day is to provide opportunities for high school students to learn about the vast variety of professional careers within the county borders and to encourage those students to return to the area after graduation.
To be eligible to receive the scholarship, students had to have received a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma from a participating school between the years of 2019 to 2022. Applicants must also be a resident or plan to become a resident of O’Brien County and/or be employed or self-employed in the county. Abby competed in a selection process that included submitting an essay and being interviewed by the selection committee.
Curt Strouth, Sheldon Community Development Director and John Vander Veen, one of the first O’Brien County Career Day Scholarship recipients, presented the scholarship to Abby during the 5th annual O’Brien County Career Day on April 29, 2022.
