Sweeney's Clubhouse Opens in Sutherland
It's passion driven. Doug Sweeney and his son, Austin, love to golf. But in the upper plains, it's not a year 'round activity. So they visited some golfing simulators last January in Sioux Falls. They loved it. They've also played in Ankeny. It was that experience that sparked their imaginations for "Sweeney's Clubhouse".
They researched the tools of indoor golfing. They've had the building at 118 Main Street in Sutherland for several years, renting it before that. They decided they are happiest with "Trugolf" simulators. After putting a plan together, they learned in October they would be moving forward building "Sweeney's Clubhouse". The venture is owned half by Austin and half by Doug and his wife, Char.
The unique entertainment experience will feature 3 golf simulators. Each simulator offers 45 well-known courses, like Pebble Beach, to choose from. The simulators also give a golfer all the feedback on each shot you can use. Speed, distance, hook or slice, and more.
There is also a "Simhunt Pro" simulator. A user can play shooting games, shoot trap, whatever. "The whole idea is to bring entertainment. Younger people are coming back and we need to capture they younger people. But this is good for all ages." said Doug.
Leagues are forming now to begin in January. Leagues will be operated much like outside golf leagues. At Sweeney's Clubhouse they will be 10 weeks each. Current plans are for Monday through Thursday leagues with one at 5:30 and another at 7:30. They are also making space for 16 2-person women's teams. If there is a demand for earlier leagues, Doug is not opposed to making it work. Flexibility is something they are working toward.
League cost is $180 per person for the 10 weeks. Non league use of the simulators, golf or shooting costs $30 per hour. Doug estimates that a foursome can golf an 18-hole round in about 4 hours.
The grand opening for Sweeney's Clubhouse is scheduled for December 17. Keep your eyes out for fun specials like the "Ugly Sweater" contest planned for December 23. They will be closed on the Christmas weekend, but will be open New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Reservations are being taken now for the simulators on that date and beyond. League information is available by calling 712-346-7946 now. The clubhouse phone number will be 712-446-2000 once the remodeling gets far enough along for the phone to get hooked up. Or information is available on their Facebook page, Sweeneysclubhouse.com.
Other features at the newest entertainment center include a full bar, big screen TV with NFL Ticket, college football and basketball. Of course, PGA golf will be on TV in the spring. The idea is a sports bar atmosphere.
Pool tables and dart boards will also be available.
